Savings Goals: How Much Should You Save?

Set a target, estimate the monthly amount, and plan a realistic timeline.

Start from the target, not the month

Most saving advice starts with "save 20%!" — a number floating free of any purpose. Flip it: name the goal, price it, date it. Then the monthly amount is just arithmetic. A $20,000 goal and a "save more" wish produce very different behavior; only one of them fits in a calendar.

A worked example

Assumptions: a $20,000 target in 4 years, with$2,000 already saved and a steady 5% annual return, monthly deposits, no fees or taxes. The required pace is$331.19/month: about $17,897 of your own deposits plus growth covering the rest, landing at exactly $20,000. Change any input in the savings goal calculatorto feel how sensitive the answer is to the timeline.

The three levers

When the monthly number looks impossible, only three things can move:

  • More time — the kindest lever; an extra year cuts the monthly need sharply.
  • A smaller target — a used car instead of new, say. Honest beats heroic.
  • More monthly input — earned by spending less or earning more, per your budget.

The assumed return is the least reliable lever: cranking it to 10% makes every plan look affordable on paper and none safer in reality. For goals under five years out, consider assuming 0% — then any growth is a bonus, not a load-bearing wall.

Limits of the math

  • Returns are assumed smooth; markets are not.
  • Taxes, fees, and inflation are excluded from the estimate.
  • Life edits timelines — revisit the plan yearly, not guiltily.

Quick answers

What if I've saved nothing yet? Then the whole target, minus growth, is ahead of you — the calculator handles that (it just divides the full gap). Starting from zero is normal.

One big goal or several small ones? Split competing goals into separate targets with separate timelines. One blurred mega-goal gets raided; named goals get defended.

Where should goal money live? Match the account to the timeline: safe and reachable for near goals, growth-oriented only for distant ones you could delay without pain.
